Manna Ceased in the Promised Land
Spiritual Building-Stone No. 190
Exodus 16:35, “And the children of Israel did eat manna forty years, until they came to a land inhabited; they did eat manna, until they came unto the borders of the land of Canaan.”
Listen what the
Prophet of God said about it:
He was blessing Israel probably the same day that they refused to go up there
and to take the promised land. The same day that they disbelieved the spies,
the manna fell just the same that night. But they were altogether out of the
will of the Lord. They could not win another battle until they come back and
made things right with God. Now, I think it's time for the church to get back
to God again. Get back and get started like it should be going, so we can
continue on our journey. [1]
Think, how perfect, how they could've walked everyday, walking with the Lord. What a life to live, right in the wilderness. Eat manna of the morning, that fell over the night (Exod. 16). [2]
There's where they made their mistake, when they come to the judgment seat and brought back the evidence of a good land (Numbers 13; 14:1-12). I'm so glad that there were people years ago, who approached through all the formalities and went up and possessed the land and got the evidence and come back, that there's a land beyond the river. Amen. I'm so glad of that. Now, they made their fatal mistake when they begin to murmur against Moses and against God's servants and against God, and it bypassed them. And remember, every one of them that murmured never went over into the land. Jesus said when He was on earth, "Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, but they are every one dead. But I am the bread of Life that comes from God out of heaven that a man can eat thereof and not die." (John 6:48-58). Oh, I like that. Pass from death unto life, become a new creature in Christ Jesus (John 5:24). [3]
Remember, Israel journeyed. Did you know all the farther they come? They would've been... They were only forty miles, about forty years doing it. Why? Is because that they begin to murmur against the voice that had produced the sign. How little did they know, when they were shouting down there on the banks and dancing in the Spirit, and Moses singing in the Spirit, they were only just a few days off. But they begin to murmur, and wanted to do something different. And they stayed forty years in the wilderness and perished over it (That's right.), because they didn't believe. God said, "They're not talking against you, Moses, they're talking against Me." That was God's voice, not Moses' (I Cor. 10:1-13). [4]
When Israel left Egypt,
they all believed in one prophet's message. They seen the signs of God by
Moses; every one of them saw them. And they each one come out of Egypt, and
walked through the Red Sea, and was baptized unto Moses. Each one saw the
power of God strike him when he sang in the Spirit and when Miriam beat the
tambourine, run up and down the coast. Each one of them every night eat fresh
heavenly manna out of the skies. Each of those drank from that spiritual Rock
that was smitten. And there was two million people left Egypt. How many made
the promised land? Two, one out of a million. Where they all at? Jesus said
they perished. "Your fathers eat manna in the wilderness for the space
of forty years, and I say unto you, that they are all dead."
Now, there's about five hundred million Christians in the world today, counting
Catholic, Protestant, and all. If Jesus should come in that rapture, according
to what I've just said, there would be five hundred missing in the world today
in the rapture. And they probably is that every day, counting all the lands,
that's never accounted for. So it could be at any time. See?
Oh, Christians, let us buckle on the armor of God (Eph. 5:11-20). Let us do
all that we know how to serve Him, love Him, and wait for that great time.
But God will prosper you. "Why, He blesses me." I don't doubt that. He blessed Balaam too (Numbers 22). See? Certainly He will. You'll walking in His permissive will, not His perfect will. God doesn't change His mind 'cause He blesses you. He blessed Israel right out there for forty years. What did they do? Married wives, raised families, kissed the children, paid their tithe, lived right out there, and God blessed them in the wilderness, fed them with the manna on and on; and every one of them perished, 'cause they never kept His original will, His Word. They took His permissive way. [5]
They are like the children of Israel who came out of Egypt and stopped short of the Promised Land. Now those children of Israel left Egypt about two million strong. They all journeyed together, all saw the same miracles of God, all partook of the same manna and water from the smitten rock, all followed the same cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night (Exod. 13:21-22; 14:24), but ONLY TWO reached the Promised Land. Only two were true or real believers. That is correct because the Word tells us that the rest died because of unbelief; and because of unbelief they could not enter in (Hebrews 3:19). Then since that is so, and only two entered, then the rest were not true believers. What made the difference? Two stayed with the Word. When the hearts of the ten spies failed at Kadesh Barnea, Joshua and Caleb did not stagger for they believed the Word and said, "We are more than able to take the land." They knew they could because God had said, "I have given you the land." (Exod. 3:7-8,17). After all those Israelites saw of the power and goodness and deliverance of God they did not enter into rest, which is a type of the Holy Ghost. So you can see right now that very few will ever believe all the way to receiving the Spirit of God. [6]
God is under obligation
to take care of His promise. When God brought Israel out into the wilderness,
He promised to take care of them. And what God promised, God's under obligation
to do. When they needed water, they went to the rock. When they needed food,
God rained manna out of heaven. He opened up the Red Sea.
Look at that manna falling down, what a beautiful type of our Church today.
As God led Israel in the natural, He's leading the Church today in the spiritual.
[7]
Now, Paul is talking to
the spiritual Israel who has possessed the land. Oh, aren't you glad you've
come out of Egypt's garlic? Aren't you glad you're out of the wilderness?
And remember, they had to eat manna, Angel's food out of heaven, until they
crossed over into the land (Joshua 5:10-12). And when they crossed over into
the land, the manna ceased to fall. They were fully matured then, and they
eat the old corn of the land. Now, now that you're not babies anymore, now
that you're not desiring the sincere milk of the Gospel, that you don't have
to be babied, and patted, and persuaded to come to church, now that you're
real fully matured Christians, you're ready to eat strong meats now (Heb.
5:12-14; 6:1-3). You're ready to come into something, he said. You're ready
to understand something that's deep and rich. Oh, we'll get into it directly.
And, oh, it's been hidden since the foundation of the world. He said, "Now,
that you've come into this, I'm addressing this to you," not to those
who've just left Egypt, not to those who are still in the journey, but to
those who are in the promised land, that has received the promise (I Cor.
2:6-10).
How many's received the promise of the Holy Ghost? Oh, aren't you glad that
you're in the land over here now, eating the old corn, eating the strong things
of God, and got a clear understanding. Your spiritual mind is all unmuddled
up. You know exactly Who He is. You know exactly What He is. You know exactly
where you're going. You know exactly all about It (Eph. 1:15-23). [8]
Notice, brethren. Then how long was this manna to last? It lasted the entire journey, until they hit into another dispensation over into the promised land. How long is this to last? Until Jesus comes. Peter said, "Repent, every one of you, and be baptized in the Name of Jesus Christ for the remission of your sins, and you shall receive the Holy Ghost; for the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to them that's far off, even as a many as the Lord our God shall call." (Acts 2:38-39). How long was it to last? As many as the Lord our God shall call. And as long as the dispensation of grace lasts, God will still call men and women to His service. [9]
